The importance of the weaving industry in the national economy of Bangladesh is immense.
From traditional loom sectors, it produces about 600 million meters of woven fabric annually,
which meets about 40 percent of domestic demand. The value added tax from this industry is
about Tk. 1500.00 crore. Bangladesh’s Traditional loom industry is the largest cottage industry in the country. According to the loom census by the government in 2003, there were more than 5 lakh handlooms in the country, out of which more than 1 lakh 35 thousand were in Sirajganj
district.
Its place is second to agriculture in terms of rural employment, including women’s participation. About 1.5 million people of the country are directly and indirectly involved in this industry on the basis of profession.
Sirajganj is one of the weaved areas of the country. This district is very well known for the loom
products. The name of the loom is closely associated with Sirajganj district. The total number of
weaver families in Sirajganj district is 14,60 and the number of loom is more than 135,000. Every year about 23 crore meters of cloth is produced from handlooms in this district. Besides,
this industry has created employment opportunities for about 3 lakh people in Sirajganj district.
The weavers of Sirajganj district produce various types of garments including sari, lungi, towel,
than cloth, three pitch, rural check.
